Abstract

Publisher and letterpress printer, Thierry Bouchard (1954-2008) was a true book artist. More than 300 books, all printed with lead types, came out of his presses, located in Losne in Côte d'Or : a visit to his workshop shows in a concrete way what this life devoted to the art of the book was like. While printing for other publishers, he particularly collaborated with an exceptional engraver, Petr Herel. Together they founded a collection called Layrinth Press, comprising 21 books printed on Bouchard’s presses and illustrated with engravings by Petr Herel. Just as the visit to the workshop gave an insight into the typographer-editor's total commitment to his work, the detailed examination of the first book in the Labyrinth Press collection, Novalis's Fragments et grains de pollen, allows us to measure to what degree of sensitive intelligence rises the production of such a masterpiece, which is representative of the consonance between text and image so passionately sought by these two creative minds.
